Running a business is one of the biggest achievements in life, and you should definitely be proud of yourself. As a business owner, you are already aware that this isn’t only rewarding but also frequently overwhelming and challenging.
Yes, you are your own boss, you are the one who determines when and how much you’ll work, but that doesn’t mean that life will all of a sudden become drastically simpler. At the end of the day, you need to worry about your personal life, too!
That isn’t always easy, and sometimes, it feels as if your personal life begins shrinking around your company. Balancing these two may at times be difficult, but it isn’t impossible. If you find it hard to do this right now, then maybe the tips below will help you create a perfect balance.
In the beginning, when you’re still figuring things out, you’ll probably be inspired by all the “ideal” pictures and posts you see on social media platforms where people showcase just how they handle everything perfectly when it comes to their work-life balance.
For starters, what you need to remember is the fact that just because their lives seemingly look amazing, it doesn’t mean that they successfully juggle these two. And even if they do, that doesn’t mean that you need to do the same.
Your version of balance doesn’t need to be the same as everyone else’s. Oftentimes, your personal life can impact your professional life, and vice versa. And then there’ll be moments during which you won’t feel like any of these two are further complicating your life, because you are navigating everything fantastically.
The point is that things won’t consistently be linear. Sometimes your business life will take too much of your time, and then there will come the time when your personal life will require more attention.
The sooner you accept this, along with the fact that your vision of balance is unique, the better you’ll handle different challenges that come with this.
As an ambitious entrepreneur who has recently launched their business, you probably want to expand your company as quickly as possible. Even though it’s great when you’re that driven, bear in mind that people in these instances tend to completely neglect their health and solely concentrate on the professional aspect of their life, which can be detrimental.
No matter how much you love your job and your organization, in general, nothing is more important than your well-being. Therefore, if you share this opinion, then you should try your best to properly maintain it.
This refers to having a good night’s sleep, nutritious meals, doing some type of physical activity, etc. If you think you do not spend enough quality time with your family, yet you do not want to neglect your health, then you can always invite them to join you when you’re exercising.
This way, you’ll have a fun time together, plus you’ll take care of your body the right way. Now, physical health isn’t the only important part of your well-being. Don’t forget that mental health is equally important.
Therefore, you should always take some time to focus on. This means doing the things you generally enjoy that relax you, like meditation, yoga, reading your favorite book, a bubble bath, and so on. Whatever suits your mood.
There are lots of business owners who are abnormally obsessed with work. If you ask them, everything must revolve around their businesses, and they do not rest until they’ve accomplished certain goals.
Yes, it’s great if you’re that driven, but in the long run, this approach is nothing but harmful in many ways. Rest shouldn’t be perceived as a reward, but as a normal part of every day. Do you honestly think that you’ll be capable of giving 100% of yourself if you’re continuously working and doing nothing but that?
At some point, you’ll simply collapse, both physically and mentally. That’s why rest must be part of your daily routine if you want your body and mind to function normally.
Most people were taught from an early age that if they want to succeed in life (when it comes to their professional aspect), they need to work very hard. Although it’s great if you put in a lot of effort, there’s no guarantee that you will be successful if your life revolves mostly around work.
Instead of working too hard, it’s a lot smarter to work smart. So what does it mean? It means that you should optimize your productivity, meaning that you should wisely use your time and energy, and not spend the entire day working.
Instead of reacting to every task all day, it would be better to assign focused blocks of time to specific kinds of work. For instance:
8:00 – 11:00 – Do tasks that are related to strategy development and writing
11:30 – 1:30 – Talking to your clients
2:00 – 3:00 – Admin tasks
3:30 onward, everything else that needs to be done, so you can slowly wrap things up
Boundaries Are Important
It’s great if you love your job, but (as stated previously), that surely shouldn’t be the only thing you’ll do. That’s why it’s pivotal to set some boundaries as far as this goes. It doesn’t need to be any drastic change. For starters, you can:
Have at least one or two hours per day when you won’t use any of the devices that are reserved for business purposes
Define a time when your professional aspect ends, and your personal life begins
Have an end-of-day ritual
Aside from this, another thing that you can do is to take a couple of steps at the end of your work day, that are going to remind you that it’s really time to say goodbye to the professional aspect of your life, and welcome the personal counterpart. You can do so by:
Reviewing what was done that day
Turning off your computer
Leaving the office
If you work from home, then it would be advisable to designate a room that’s going to be dedicated solely to your work tasks. This is important because personal and professional life should be separated.
It’s great when you’re independent and able to juggle various tasks at the same time, but just because you can do it, it doesn’t mean that you should. There’ll be moments when everything will become too much, and that’s the time when you need to seek some support.
If you don’t do this, you’ll only be adding more stress to your life. Consequently, make sure to reach out to people who are close to you, such as your family, friends, colleagues, or anyone else who can help you maintain this balance.
Just because you’re trying to create a balance, it doesn’t mean that any of these is going to suffer. It just means that you will create a life that’s going to allow them to function and exist normally.
